Abbeyglen Castle Hotel ★★★★

A lovely building with a very comfortable feel to it. Room was lovely and spacious.

Staff were very friendly but not well coordinated

Beautiful property in Clifden. Our room was spectacular, really spacious and had a gorgeous view. There was a Prosecco reception in the evening where they take your photograph which is then presented to you at dinner. The owner also gives a local history talk in the evenings which was nice.

Food is average at best, dinner is quite overpriced for what you get so would try a local restaurant next time we visit.

Nice breakfast and the staff was very kind

The staff, service, and attention to detail surpassed our expectations. We recommend attending the free welcome reception and eating dinner at the castle. It was all great!

It was warm while there and could not cool down our room. If there was a thermostat, we couldn't find it.

Quirky, staff interactive in restaurant and pleasant in other areas. Owner hands on and nice touch receiving a photo of us enjoying our meal. Castle has many interesting focal points to enjoy and explore.

The very friendly staff pulled us in the atmosphere of that night hotel family. It was great and we enjoed it a lot. The bathtube was superb!!! The brown peat water was amazing. Outside of our room run a small stream and when I went to sleep I have started to meditate even I do not know how to do it. More great thing, you should find yourself when you stay here.

Room no.27 shower drain was blocked. Same like how I have it at home. The plug of the DVD player should be fixed. I loved their breakfast. It was hard not over eat. I was not perfect but I did not fail too much.

What makes this place unique is the approach of the owner. He speaks to one and all in a most natural and welcoming way. As a solo traveller, I felt included when he gathered us together for an amusing talk on the history of the hotel and Cliften. Complimentary tea, scones and later prececco were most generous. The staff follow his cue and were very nice. Top Marks.

Beautiful building (castle) on top of a hill. Extremely friendly personnel. We received tea and scones when we arrived, and champagne during the welcome reception, which was accompanied by a nice story about the castle and the environment. Perfect place if you want to do a bike trip (several places nearby where you can rent bikes). When we had to leave really early (before breakfast time) they brought breakfast to our room, very kind!

The room at Abbeyglen is plesant. Corridors and bar basic and needs refurbishment. Staff as always great. Food good, but could improve. E.g. Afternoon tea nice but scones basic/? Bought

Hotel is dirty and badly maintained, bedding stained ,defiantly not what you would expect from a castle, very pretentious and a poor three star hotel at best.

The breakfast was nice. And so was the dinner served in the restaurant (albeit for a hefty fee). The proprietor/owner was also a kind man who came around to greet everyone in the restaurant.

Abbeyglen Castle Hotel was the worst hotel we stayed in during our 9 day stay in Ireland. It is a 3-star hotel at best with a 4-star restaurant and other amenities (that we didn't use but looked subpar). The room had signs that said not to be disturbed by the dirty looking water and a caution to keep the windows closed and lights off in order to not attract insects (obviously a problem if they have signs about it). The bedding was worn and cheap. Unfilled holes in walls. Cobwebs on the interior lighting. Uneven floors throughout the building. The internet didn't work on the 2nd floor and after speaking with the office 3x over the course of an hour they finally admitted that it wasn't working and said that I needed to come down into the lobby if I wanted to use the internet. They also had a birdcage with bird food meshed into the floor right next to the reception desk. This property needs some serious investment to be considered a "nice" hotel. [Note: I contacted the hotel directly after our stay to explain some of the challenges and got an email back from them blaming the internet issues on their internet service provider. They made no apologies nor offered to refund any portion of the premium price we paid for our stay].

Other than the good location and breakfast, the hotel is old and disappointing. I have no doubt it previously earned it’s 5 star rating, but it’s now really just a fancy old 3 star. I found the older manager (owner?) mingling with the guests in the dining room distracting with his repetitive comments table to table. The champagne in the pub was a lovely gesture and served by Paul, but please serve decent bubbly to your guests. A long stay researcher guest, who flies his helicopter in and out daily and lands/takeoff on the grounds, was about the most interesting aspect of this hotel.

The hotel reception staff were disengaged and not very welcoming. Some of the restaurant servers were excellent, others not so much. The windows in our room faced out with a great view, but you had to look through cobwebs and dirty windows. The bathroom is dated could have been much cleaner.

Great location, beautifully situated and walking distance to town. Nice comfortable room with great view. Nice towels. Nice selection for breakfast.

The bathroom was very dated and patched up. The big shelf made it awkward to turn taps on/off. No mixer tap. The shower was really old but in working condition but aesthetically its not very pleasing, nor are the tiles. Meagre choice of coffee/ tea and no snacks with it, which is really poor for a 4*. Also no fridge which you could live with I suppose. Its time to ditch the individual small bottles and invest in large pump dispensers! I understand that its a family run hotel but really, all the different carpets?? Something a bit more neutral would look a lot classier!

The staff was adorable, beautiful room and very nice environment. The breakfast in the morning was very good and we strongly appreciated the afternoon tea treats and the welcome reception with Prosecco and amuse-bouches.
